Tocco is off to Germany for the week... I wish I could have gone, but it was pretty last minute, the flights are so expensive and we have a lot to save up for (like a honeymoon... yes, eventually).
It's so strange being at this house alone. I know it's dramatic because he just left, but driving back from the airport and after running errands without him yesterday evening made this whole adventure feel like a whole lot less. San Leandro suddenly seemed so far away from family again, we don't really know the neighbors, and where are we anyway?! Maybe because we've not had years of family passing through this house yet, and it's still pretty new to us, but I realized this house is just a structure without him, and a whole lot less fun. I wouldn't need to keep it if he wasn't here. Tocco, you make this house my home.
Safe travels, Salty. Can't wait to see you on Friday. :)

A Door Story
Maybe less of a "door" story than a hood story, since this project actually was more about exploring the hood than changing a door. Nevertheless, its been a while since we tackled our last indoor project and - according to Megan's list, and my wish - we wanted to replace the door on the ground floor that leads to the basement and looks more like something is hiding behind it, with something that integrates our not-so-new-anymore refinished basement. Not like a wall that closes it off, rather a glass door or a door with a window, so it creates a better flow to the house and incorporates the basement into the living space.
However, it all started on a Saturday, a beautiful sunny northern California day. Right around the corner from our home we have a complex of "ReStore", "ReUse" and thrift stores that we've been meaning to swing by anyway, not really expecting to find something but to stroll around for a bit. And here we are, a new nook in our hood.
The ReStore store, at least one of them in this complex.
The door section, yes - they really do carry an entire aisle of old doors, who would have thought that. And even some pretty ones here and there.
As well as a couple of massive old and huge butcher blocks, or parts of an old massive wooden door, I couldn't tell, but beautiful wood though, I was tempted to buy them just to have them, but somehow I lost track of them.
Next building, next store, this time building supplies only, and not just one aisle of doors, no, a dozen.

Including this beauty, that - as sad as it is - won't fit anywhere on the house - as hard as we tried to find an excuse or an idea of where to reuse this one, but, didn't happen, much to Megan's sadness ... ;-)

Which do you think is more satisfying in a day?
Getting new fun shoes...
Or painting a fence, and taking it off the miles-long to-do list?

It's a tough call! I went back and forth all day.
MOM
I had such a nice time with my Mom! Tocco keeps saying that the house feels like a home now that she's been here, and I think that's true. Come back soon, Mama!
We went to the beach...
Stuck our toes in the sand...
Watched Tocco kitesurf...
Checked out nature...
Went to jail...
Worked in the yard...
Painted the fence...
Chose a color to paint the house...
Had Tocco's famous giant burgers...
And tons of other things! I love you Mom!

Mom visits!
She's en route right now from Maryland! This photo is from her visit last summer. We took a walk around Moss Beach and discovered this incredible open forest. It was like a movie set. A perfect spot for an outdoor wedding or a dinner party with best friends and family. Love

Happy Hump Day
Are there any two words that sound nicer together than "pool water"? No, I don't think so.

Favorite thing from the weekend
OG from Megan Mayer-Rothbarth on Vimeo.
Trolling old houses in the neighborhood and talking about how we could fix them up has become a new pastime. We came across this old rickety house complete with old rickety car. I think this video business is going to need to become a series.

Apartment Therapy
One design degree away from Emily Henderson (who did the prettiest things here and always here) and our bedroom? Yes please and thank you! Thrilled to see our bedroom featured on Apartment Therapy yesterday. Totally out of the blue. I'd love to spend time in any and all of these rooms and hop a degree to grab that Cross Blanket.
Click here to check out the Six Degrees of Separation between the rooms.
Here's our bedroom before: (yikes)

Yay!
I have had waaay better luck transferring plants into containers before (it was a 7 a.m. hot mess), but that doesn't lessen the love I have for this succulent arrangement my sister and nephews sent over for good wishes in the house, plant style! I love them so much! Thank you!

Rain Date
Our housewarming party got rained out! Too bad. But it was a seriously good call on canceling it. We're not trying to get mud errywhere. And really, it's enough to ask car-less friends to come to San Leandro on a good day - who wants to do it in the rain? Who even wants to go outside? It worked out. Tocco and I had much to discuss and some great friends came over anyway, and it was perfect.
This dude came over and was like, I'm a party of one. I can do it allll myself. So much so she needed a bath before coming back in and passing out on the couch. Oh Dora! Who are you, even?

Link love
Drab day dreaming: I am digging these photos of the Rhoads family's ivory, denim, plant, and sun-soaked home. So great. I already have that robe and I'm thinking that's a pretty crucial start. ;-)

Beach House
Last Weekend
Over the weekend we got to do exactly what we bought this house for - to spend the day outside, at the beach, Tocco getting time on the water, me with something great to read, then coming home, fixing a salad from the garden, firing up the grill, a drink, the sunset, talking about the day. Coming back inside I realized my shirt smelled like campfire and it reminded me of our road trip a few years ago - always a sweet, welcome surprise. California! I really love you. Looking forward to so many more spring and summer days around the house with friends and family.

A few more pics from the weekend after the break

Ironing Board---> Cookbook shelf
I love this little project Tocco surprised me with one day after work. You know those long nooks that, back in the day, housed the ironing board? They're really sweet, and I love knowing that our house is old enough to have had such a quaint life- ironing in the kitchen, yellow counter tiles, probably some flowerpots on the windowsills, and some Patsy Cline on the record player or something.
Less charming is the wild green paint, again. The previous owner had made this nook into the spot for her phone and at the bottom, a special holder for her yellow pages. She probably logged hundreds of hours on that phone, sitting at her kitchen table, like my Mom and Aunt Judy. ;) But since it's 2014 and we need neither a phone, nor the yellow pages, T got to work sanding, scraping and clearing away the old set up.
Then he made these awesome little T-shelves x4 in his workshop...
Secured them with special brackets...
Nailed them in place in equal measures, and painted them white...
And now this old space that was a big eyesore has been transformed into something useful for us, and also so pretty. I really love how natural it looks, like it could have always been there, or that it's a custom built-in we had made from scratch.
It currently holds my cookbooks and a wedding present from Tocco's mom, Brigitte, which we love. But I can see it changing out with a variety of objects over time.
